It is my dream that every school in the region will teach about native plants and their integral support of the web of life in Cascadia. It is my goal to facilitate the study of ethnobotany, plant ecology, permaculture and the interconnection of all life within our bioregion.
I envision a series of free schools set up throughout the biome that promote the free discussion and study of the importance of native plants and plant ecology. These programs of studies will include hikes into native forests, deserts, high mountains and other botanically rich areas of Cascadia. It is my hope that living classrooms will be set up in each community so that knowledge of plants can be kept alive.
I envision finding local plant teachers to provide knowledge that has been lost to us over the last 100 years.
Hello
My name is Michael and I am a High School science teacher. I love your site and yes I do teach about native plants in our region, subtropical eastern Australia. I live in the rainforest and I am doing my best to regenerate and catalog the natives on our 50 acre property. I would love to compare notes with you as i am a transplanted Californian.
Cheers
Hello Ellen. We met down by the North Beach in Port Townsend. I was taking my drum to meet the ocean. We had a conversation about ancestry and teaching the children. I would like to show you where I have been trained the last two years: http://wildernessawareness.org/ I spent last year helping to mentor children into deep relationship with the natural world using the 8 shield coyote mentoring model developed by Jon Young. What you said to me about tribe hit me deeply that day. My name McKinney, means fire in the heart, or Devotion of Fire. We were “lords of truagh”. I dream of singing and giving thanks in circles with my community, of dancing and cooking food together, communing with wind water and earth, learning from the plants and from the animals, of having big celebration opening to grieve again, for all that has lost, and reclaiming a knowing that we belong.
Matt
What a surprise to get that wonderful phone call from you! And, what a nice email you sent to me. What a lovely vision. And you do know about your heritage. We Irish are old tribes that once kissed the earth and the sky. Then we lost our way and came here to this land and started laying our madness upon the land. Now, we must turn it around and help to heal the land and the indeginous people.
I will be so glad to see Johnny Moses tomorrow night. THANK YOU for telling that he would be here in Port Townsend. I used to belong to his Red Cedar circle and drummed and prayed to the healing of others. Maybe he will let me come back. I have been away too long.
For these 15 years I have looked for my tribe. My drum has been very quiet for too long. I too love the children and see the hope for the future in helping them learn about the earth and all the trees, lakes, plants, creepy crawlers, tall ones, …all of the divine creation.
Hope to see you again tomorrow night.
Bright Blessing always,
